Ulumbarra Theatre ‘Ned’
Located in the heart of the city, Bendigo’s new theater Ulumbarra, is both a picture of modern and historic beauty. With over 1000 seats, a spacious and easily accessible design, it is quickly becoming the talk of the town. Built in Bendigo’s old gaol, the design has managed to preserve and bring to life one of Bendigo’s most notable buildings.

It is therefore no surprise that one of Australia’s sell-out plays has been featured there over the last month. ‘Ned’, directed by Garry Young and composed Adam Lyon, is a new musical portraying the intriguing and adventurous life of notorious bushranger Ned Kelly. With a beautiful mix of music, drama and entertainment, the production puts a new and exciting take on this well-known Australian figure. Beginning at the end of his life, 11th of November 1880, the story then proceeds in a flashback. Instead of simply focusing of the crimes that he and the rest of the Kelly gang committed, Ned’s tale is told from the start of his life, shedding light into who he was and perhaps why he was that way.
It becomes clear early on how important the women in Ned’s life were in shaping him, which is an interesting and new piece of information to Ned’s story. The show then weaves and wanders through a brilliant display of acting and song, giving a new and fun take on this usually dark historic figure.
It is a play that is not to be missed, and one that is in popular demand. Luckily for those of you who have not yet had the chance to see this theatrical masterpiece it has been extended this weekend and will have its last performance on Sunday 31st May 2015.
